Four Maintenance Strategies to Know About
January 2025
In 2024, extreme weather conditions intensified the pressure on our infrastructure. Severe storms, heavy rainfall, and an increasingly unpredictable climate tested power grids to their limits – both in Sweden and internationally. The demand for robust and reliable solutions has therefore never been greater.
At the same time, technology such as Gomero's control equipment, SIPP, has proven to be a crucial resource for protecting the environment, reducing the risk of harmful oil spills, and ensuring operational reliability at substations.
In 2024, SIPP prevented over 6,800 oil spills from transformer bunds at substations in Sweden, Norway, Finland, Germany, Italy, and Australia. According to new drainage statistics, oil spills have been prevented in approximately every tenth drainage operation.
SIPP continuously monitors transformer bunds, which are designed to prevent transformer oil from leaking into the environment in the event of a malfunction, for oil content, water levels, and temperature. This unique solution ensures that transformer oil does not escape into the environment and that rainwater released is free from contaminants.
The statistics underscore the importance of predictive maintenance and clearly demonstrate how this technology makes a practical difference.
The changing climate not only increases stress on infrastructure but also imposes new demands on how power grid operators work. Functionality must be ensured even under extreme conditions, which requires both technical innovation and organisational adaptation.
Automated solutions like SIPP reduce the need for manual inspections and maintenance, enhancing personnel safety while also lowering emissions from transport associated with inspections and drainage operations.
One of SIPP's greatest strengths is its predictive technology, which enables the early detection of issues before they escalate into costly failures or emergency situations. For power grid operators, this means not only reduced costs but also a smaller environmental footprint – a solution that balances economic efficiency with sustainable responsibility.
While the technology is advanced, the goal is simple: to protect the environment in a cost-effective and sustainable way, while creating resilient infrastructure for the future.
